Harper boosts Canadas role on world stage with were back speech
The Conservative governments international agenda is laid before the world today as Prime Minister Stephen Harper addresses the United Nations General Assembly in his first appearance as prime minister at the international body.
Harper will take the podium after addressing business leaders Wednesday night at the Economic Club of New York, where he emphasized Canada should be regarded as an important player on the economic scene.
Canadas back, he said, although most of the figures he cited to illustrate the upward trend in the economy had begun emerging under the Liberals.

Duceppe wants Canada to return to traditional role of peacekeeper in Mideast
Bloc Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe says Prime Minister Stephen Harper needs to return Canada to its traditional role of peacekeeper in the Middle East.
Duceppe criticized the Harper government Friday and accused it of doing a poor job since the Lebanese crisis erupted a few weeks ago.
The Bloc leader is particularly upset with Harper for defending Israels airstrikes in Lebanon as a measured response after the kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah.

Nuclear energy to play important role in Canada: PM
Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Friday nuclear energy will play an important role in future energy solutions in Canada.
Speaking at a joint conference with his Australian counterpart John Howard after their two days of meetings, Harper said althoughhis government has not made final its nuclear policies, he thinks nuclear energy is going to be an important part of the mix as we deal with energy and environmental challenges in the next century.
