Violinist Djokic gets to play rare instrument through national competition
Halifax violinist Marc Djokic is one of the violin winners in the Canada Councils national competition for the loan of musical instruments with a total value of over $18 million.
Created in 1985, the Musical Instrument Bank acquires through donations and loans fine stringed instruments to be loaned to gifted young Canadian musicians to help further their international solo or chamber music careers.
Winners of this years competition were awarded the use of their instruments for a three-year period. This was the largest-ever competition in the Instrument Banks history, with 11 instruments and a cello bow being awarded.

Sweden needs to be perfect against Canada
As most of the world expected, Team Canada will be on the ice Monday making a bid for their second consecutive Olympic gold medal in the women's ice hockey competition. What none foresaw was the face of their competition: Sweden.

Despatie, competing in just his second international 10-metre platform competition in over a year, flubbed his second of six dives and had to settle for the bronze medal.
Olympic silver medallist Mathew Helm of Australia earned at least one perfect 10 on four of his six dives in the final to win the gold with 1,085.60 points. Peter Wakefield of England was second at 1,030.50 and Despatie was third with 1,016.95.

Canadians across the country are missing work to watch the early morning World Cup games, rooting for France, Brazil, Argentina -- any nation but their own.

Crosby to play for Canada at worlds
Crosby, who was passed over by Canadian officials for the Torino Olympics, will participate in the tournament, which runs from May 5-21 in Riga, Latvia.
Crosby has an impressive international career at the junior level. He won a silver medal at the 2004 world championships before capturing gold with his fellow Canadian teammates the following year.
Crosby, Mike Comrie of the Phoenix Coyotes, Kyle Calder of the Chicago Blackhawks and Brad Boyes, Patrice Bergeron and Brad Stuart of the Boston Bruins will play for Canada at the May 5-21 tournament in Riga, Latvia.

MELBOURNE, Australia (CP) - Canada won the gold medal in the women's 16 and under 5x50-metre freestyle relay at the Victoria State Swimming Championships on Friday.
The meet is being held at the 10-lane pool that will be used for the Commonwealth Games in March.
