Canada slips in world competitiveness ranking
Canada has slipped three spots in a ranking of the worlds most competitive countries, with taxation and labour markets among the countrys weakest aspects, according to a report released Tuesday by the World Economic Forum.
Canadas tax rates and regulations were the two most problematic business factors, the survey found. Inefficient government bureaucracy and restrictive labour regulations were also cited.
Canadian economic competitiveness dropped to 16th place from last years 13th position, placing it between Israel and Austria in the latest report, issued from Geneva, Switzerland.

Canada dollar slips on commodities, Fed concerns
The Canadian dollar crept lower in a narrow range on Monday as weaker commodity prices prompted selling versus a U.S. dollar bolstered by expectations that the new head of the U.S. Federal Reserve could signal continued interest rate hikes.
Bond prices rose moderately, helped by weak Canadian stocks.
The currency finished at C$1.1557 to the U.S. dollar, or 86.53 U.S. cents, down from C$1.1538 to the U.S. dollar, or 86.67 U.S. cents, at Friday's close.

Weyerhaeuser cutting operations in Canada, U.S.
Weyerhaeuser Co. has became the latest firm in the beleaguered forestry sector to take the axe to its operations.
The Federal Way, Wash., company (TSX:WYL) (NYSE:WY) said it will permanently close one of two paper machines at its Dryden, Ont., pulp and paper mill. The closure will cost 80 of the mill's 795 employees their jobs.
Weyerhaeuser also said its Prince Albert, Sask., paper and pulp mill will cease production of paper permanently at the end of December.
Pulp production will continue until spring to minimize the risk of damage from cold weather.

Canada taps tough-to-obtain oil
With crude oil selling for over $70 a barrel, costly development of unconventional oil supplies finally appears viable.
